Chicago Summer Calendar

tl;dr – Default Calendar, no sports

I present to you the 3rd annual Chicago Summer Calendar for 2013. I’ve made a few changes to this year’s edition. Addresses and maps for each event are much more accurate and standard this year. In previous years they were hastily thrown in at best. And getting to a map straight from the location section was spotty. Also, this year was a bit quicker and less time consuming to add events. Mostly because I can build upon events prior. So with the time saved I have decided to add a few more events this year. There should be a handful more of street fests, though some seem to have disappeared. This year includes Farmer’s Markets, we’ll see if anyone hates having them in there. Last year there was a lot of love/hate surrounding the addition of White Sox/Cubs games. To address this, I’m splitting things out into multiple calendars as follows:

The default with all events, sans sports.
The default with all events, including Cubs games
The default with all events, including White Sox games (despite how much I’m a Cubs fan)
The default with all events and Cubs/Sox

A note about this to cover a lot of frequently asked questions. First off, this is mostly a summer calendar. The only reason being is that there isn’t much to do in our city in the winter that I know of. I am looking for ideas for events to add in the winter, so please let me know. This is my third year, and each year brings about many changes to what I add. Second, I try to stick to events that are sufficient enough in popularity. If I could add every smaller event I would, but I don’t have enough space in Google Calendar or enough time in the world to do so fairly for everything. Bummer. I know. Last but not least. Yes, I do this every year. I start in March and am generally done by the end of May. A lot of info doesn’t get released until late May anyways, nor are there too many events in May to begin with. So if you’re wondering when the calendar will be done, it probably already is for the most part. At least for the upcoming month or two.

Hey look, a puppy!

Hey look, a puppy!

As I said, I am still putting the finishing touches on everything. So right now the default with all events excluding sports is what I have. However, Cubs/Sox will be added in the next few days.

The other event I have not added yet is Summerdance, they released their schedule extremely late this year. I now award Summerdance this year’s dunce hat for dragging ass. Previously Movies in the Park held that title.

Speaking of Movies in the Park, they were absolutely awesome this year with their data. Each MitP event now includes a synopsis, year released, IMDB link, Closed Caption information, weather cancellation contact info, and a link to its Youtube trailer.

Default Calendar, no sports
Calendar with Cubs games (coming soon)
Calendar with White Sox games (coming soon)
Calendar with Cubs/Sox games (coming soon)

Just as a note about the calendar, if you ever see all of the events disappear. That is just me doing a mass delete/add to fix larger informational issues. This will especially happen with the Cubs/Sox calendars. This should only happen for a period of 5 – 10 minutes at a time, and fairly infrequently.

I may be missing some things. It’s entirely possible. Below is a rough list of what I think I have. If you think something else should be on here, just let me know and I will add it at my discretion.

  1. This is incredible and blissfully time saving for me. I would be happy to donate to the cause to encourage you to do this annually!

  2. This is a great effort and extremely useful information. But . . .
I’m a pretty saavy user, but can’t seem to get this to work with my Calendar program on my Mac. I can add it to my Google calendar, which allows me to see the events via the Google web interface, but it does not sync as one of my Google calendars. Perhaps that’s a limitation of how Google shares calendars. But if there is a CalDAV or ics link so that I can subscribe directly in Apple Calendar. (Or if someone knows how to make a subscribed Google calendar sync with Mac OS or iOS, please share the insight.)

  3. I’m sure I’m just being obtuse, but how do I get this incorporated with my google calendar? Thank you, the calendar is wonderful!!
